Robert Briggs received a patent in England for the Briggs Panic Bolt in 1891. Its formal name was 'Improvement in Bolts and Fastenings for Doors of Theatres and other Public Buildings'. The New Empire Theatre was the first to install the Briggs Panic Bolts in 1892. With a fire in that theatre in 1911, thousands of theatre guests managed to escape uninjured.
