Biography

William was a Friend (Quaker)

There is some question as to William's middle name. Records held by the Dover Monthly Meeting in Ohio have his middle initial as L but some records appear with middle initial G. Although William and family appear in the Quaker records, he served during the Civil War, contrary to Quaker belief in pacifism and there should be mention of it, including discipline or expulsion, yet it hasn't been found.

William and children Thomas Franklin and Wm J were received by request August 16, 1866. Rebecca requested membership among the Friends in the Dover Monthly Meeting in Guilford, North Carolina January 1866 and received a certificate from Dover MM in NC that was dated August 30, 1866, which she submitted to the Friends at the Dover MM in Ohio on October 18, 1866. The family is recorded in the Dover Monthly Meeting Minutes after they settled in Wilmington, Clinton County, Ohio.[1][2] It appears the family migrated to Ohio between January and July, 1866. The 1870 census records them living in Wilson Township, Clinton County, Ohio[3]

(b. 1860, 2, 23), Sarah O (b. 1862, 7, 20) and Mary E (b. 1864, 4, 11), are recorded in the same meeting book. Emily was recorded as a member in May of 1863 and they received her certificate from NC December of 1865. Relationship may be assumed but not known.

There were members of the Briggs family in the vicinity of the Deep River Friends that asked to be accepted as members, most likely thanks to their maternal heritage, the Ledbetter family. At the Deep River Friends Monthly Meeting held February 1890 Henry C, Iola A H, Alpheus W and Mary Briggs asked to be accepted as Members of the Society of Friends.[17] Phebe C Leadbetter (24 Sep 1835-26 Dec 1883)[18], daughter of Henry Clay Ledbetter and Ruth Iddings, married Benjamin Franklin Briggs (27 June 1829-12 Apr 1864)[19]. Their children were Alpheus Martin Briggs (8 Oct 1857-2 Apr 1936)[20], who married Mary Richardson, Henry Clay Briggs (14 Dec 1858-19 Mar 1947)[21], who married Isla A. Horney, John Rufus Briggs (19 Oct 1860-17 Oct 1917),[22] who married Laura Alice Ledbetter, and Willis Eugene Briggs who died at only 10 months.[23] All are buried in the Deep Rivers Friends Cemetery in High Point, Guilford County, NC. An Historical account of the Deep River Friends names the 3 Briggs brothers that lived to adulthood, as being an influential family. They were all born in Jamestown and grew up in Florence, not far from the Meeting House. Their father, Benjamin Franklin Briggs, with an uncle, built a buggy and carriage manufacturing business in Jamestown until his health failed. He died of Tuberculosis in October 1864. Henry Clay, the middle son, wrote about his newly widowed mother, Phebe, her sister and an aunt drove 2 wagons pulled by horses and a mule, through the Confederate lines during the civil war, over the mountains to Indiana, to escape the ravages of the war. Phebe returned to North Carolina with her 3 sons a year later. The 3 brothers built their homes near the buggy shop on what is now Penny Road. They moved the business from Florence to High Point 6 miles a way and Alpheus in 1902 and Clay in 1922 moved their homes there too. John left the business about 1910 when he moved to Greensoboro for his daughter’s education. Alpheus joined the Deep River Friends Meeting in 1890, was appointed elder and trusting in 1892. He moved their membership to Hight Point Meeting when they moved the business there. Clay remained involved at Deep River.[24]

The later must be an error because his marriage and death certificate show his middle initial is F.
