Charles Henry[1] Briggs was born on 7 March 1841[2] in Fair Haven[2], Vermont[3]. He was the child[3][2] of Eliza Hunter and shoemaker George J. Briggs, the husband[4] of M. Maria Jubar, and the brother of Civil War veteran Royal A. Briggs of the famous 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry.
In 1850, he is attending school, probably in or near Fair Haven, Vermont.[3]
His brothers Floyd, Loyal, and Royal were also barbers.
Neither New York nor Vermont ever banned interracial marriage, and the census takers usually listed Charles as Black (but also White in 1900) and Maria as White. The couple had at least seven children: Eugene, Nina, Royal (named after Charles' brother), Leora, Nelley, Dora and Eliza (named after Charles' mother.)
He passed away in 1916[2] and is buried at Cedar Grove Cemetery in Fair Haven, Vermont.[6]
