He was the son of Mary Unknown and John Briggs, and the brother of Private William M. Briggs of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, the first regiment in the United States to enlist men of color in the Civil War. His brother sacrificed his life for the freedom of all from enslavement.
