He was born c 1815, possibly in Houghton Conquest, based on census evidence. In 1861 living in Houghton Conquest age 48 he gave his birthplace as Bedford (not Bedfordshire). I think he was the son of a different Thomas, born 1775 son of Josiah and Alice, who married Susanna Catlin in Bedford St John. His parents and siblings were living in H-C in 1841 and two siiblings had been baptised very late. John appears to have been missed altogether! It would explain the use of the names Josiah (grandfather) and Susan (mother) for his children. Doesn't explain why his death age is wrong though, as it fits the 1769 birth perfectly, rather than his 1775 birth.
In the 1851 census he was living in Houghton Conquest - John Brightman Head 36 Shoemaker , born Bedfordshire; Elizabeth Brightman Wife; 38 b Houghton; Elizabeth Brightman Daughter 15 b Houghton; Ann Brightman Daughter 13 b Houghton; Sarah Brightman Daughter 11 b Houghton; Josiah Brightman Son 10 b Houghton; Thomas Brightman Son 8 b Houghton; Susan Brightman Daughter 7 b Houghton; Mary Ann Brightman Daughter 5 b Houghton; Emma Brightman Daughter 4 b Houghton; Jane Brightman Daughter b b Houghton; Charlotte Brightman Daughter 0 b Houghton. John died in the Dec quarter 1887 in Ampthill registration district aged 72.[2]
