Joseph attended Brasenose college Oxford in 1846 at the age of 17 he achieved his B.A in 1850 and his M.A in 1853. From 1858-1877 Joseph was vicar of St’s the Evangelist Bacup it appears not without its troubles according to a document written by Jeremy Greenwood in 1999 for founder’s day. He was a very unpopular Vicar neglecting his church and its congregation the church was in great disrepair ,broken pews ,cobweb’s and rotting and mouldy hymn book’s. The roof of the church collapsed in 1871 and he also neglected the school and which had to close in 1872. He appeared frequently in court as either the Plaintiff or the defendant. The reverend did attempt to raise the money for a new church to be built and sent out letter’s begging for donation’s. He sold the Parsonage for £500 and it was said that he camped out in the school room. No progress was made to build the church, the Reverend Brindle while in St Annes was threatened by the Bishop of Manchester after complaints from the Parishioner’s to be held accountable in ecclesiastical court for neglect of his duties. He seemed to have spent most of his time by the sea and only returned to Bacup when people had to take him to court to settle his account’s with them. His resigned his position to the relief of the people of Bacup and it said that great joy was felt.
