Ellen was born in about 1851 in Poole, Dorset, England [1]. She was the daughter of Thomas Charles Augustus Brine and Mary Cockram Adey.

Ellen was baptised at St James Church, in Poole, Dorset, England, on 2 April 1851 to Thomas Charles Augustus Brine, a Solicitor, and Mary Cockram Brine nee Adey of Poole [2].

On the 1851 England Census, Ellen lived on High Street in Poole, Dorset, England with her father Thomas Charles Augustus Brine, mother Mary Cockram Brine nee Adey and sister, Mary Elizabeth Brine along with 3 servants, Sarah Underwood and Maria A Messer, who are house servants, and Mary Cookman, a nurse [3].

On the 1861 England Census, Ellen lived on Market Street in Poole, Dorset, England with her father Thomas Charles Augustus Brine, mother Mary Cockram Brine nee Adey and 4 sisters, Mary Elizabeth Brine, Annie Margaret Brine, Sarah Emily Brine and Jessie Brine and brother Ernest Augustus Brine. Sarah E Adey, listed as sister in law, is also living at the residence along with 4 servants, Hannah Boyt, a cook, Emma Bloomfield, a housemaid and Julia G Hancock and Elizabeth Baker, who are nursemaids. She is a Scholar [4].

She is a Solicitor's Daughter and unmarried [5].
