John Potts Brine, son of Ralph Brine and Frances Potts, ^[1][2] was born on 4 May 1880 in Sunderland, Durham. ^[1][2][3] He was baptised on 4 December 1895 at St Stephens church, South Shields, Durham. ^[2]

On 3 April 1881 in Matlock Street, Bishop Wearmouth, Durham, with his parents Ralph Brine and Frances Brine and his siblings Alfred Brine aged 17, Harry Brine aged 9, Edith Brine aged 6 and Frederick Brine aged 3. ^[1]
