Biography

Patrick Richard Briody was born in about 1884 in St Helens, Lancashire. He was the son of Patrick Briody and Margaret (Welsh) Briody. His mother died when he was young. He seems to have preferred to use his middle name, Richard, as an adult.

Richard was a champion boxer ("Paddy Hackett"), and became a collier. When he was twenty, he was attacked one night by a gang and knocked out six of them. Unfortunately, one died, and he was tried for murder but acquitted.

Richard married Mary Briody in 1904 at St Helens Parish Church. Their first child, John Birch, was born in 1904; his birth was registered in the third quarter of 1904. He died in March 1905, and was buried on 23 Mar 1905 in the family grave.

By April 2nd 1911, Richard and Mary were living at 4 King Street, St Helens on April 2nd 1911; Richard was working as a coal mine dataller, and they had three children - Nathan (5), Margaret (3) and baby Grace. There was also a widowed char woman boarding with them - Margaret Ellen Woods, aged 46.

Little Grace died in 1912, aged 1; her death was registered in the second quarter of 1912, in Prescot district.

Richard served in the British Army during the First World War, and received the Silver Medal and the Belgian Croix de Guerre.

On 27 Feb 1920 Richard was convicted of obstructing the platform of a tramcar - he was said to have boarded and then partially blocked the way making it difficult for other passengers waiting to board, while he smoked a cigarette, and to have threatened the driver when asked to move. He was fined £1. His address at the time was King Street.

Richard died in 1946, aged 63. He was buried in Windleshaw Chantry (wrongly transcribed as Bernard).

Mary died in 1952 in St Helens, aged 68. She was buried on March 10th 1952 in her family's grave in St Helens Cemetery.

I couldn't find a good match for Patrick Richard before 1911, or for his parents at all, whether because there are errors in the above information, or because there are transcription errors in the censuses.

You couldn't verify because there are errors in censuses.

Much of the info is from first hand sources and from physical records in St.Helens archives library and newspaper records - and careful piecing together over many years. If you don't know the character you ain't got a chance because the research is nuanced and you will definitely be unable to piece it without personal interest. Thank you! There are certainly plenty of errors in censuses, and in their transcriptions. No offence intended by my remark on the profile, it's just that we come across a lot of unsourced family trees with errors in, and have to be a little cautious of any information that doesn't have source references attached.
