Mrs. Newman was a homemaker. She was a graduate of Copiah-Lincoln Junior College, where she was a member of the basketball team. As a young woman, she worked as a secretary in Washington, D.C. and taught 2nd grade at Mars Hill. She later served as secretary at Liberty Baptist Church for ten years and was an active member there for over 60 years. She was a member of the choir and active in WMU, V.I.P. and Sweet Spirit Singers. She was a member of the Eastside Homemakers Club for more than 60 years. She was well known for her quilting, handwork and crafting.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Will Davis Newman; her parents, Marshall Brister and Dona Montgomery Brister; three brothers, Malcolm Brister, Lowrey Brister and Montgomery Brister; and three sisters, Mabel McCormick, Elizabeth Maxwell and infant Elsie Brister.
She was survived by four daughters, Donna Carr and husband Roger of Natchez, Martha Whittington and husband Joe of Amite County, Linda Hill and husband Tom of Atlanta, and Paul Caston and husband Clay of Liberty; three sisters-in-law, Irva Brister of Crystal Springs, Beryl Newman of Covington, LA and Jane Newman DeWitt of Port Gibons; 10 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews.
