Biography

William Britt was born in Edgefield County, South Carolina. Depending on the document, his birth dates is as early as around 1818 and as late as around 1825. The earliest record, the 1850 census, gives his birth as around 1825, so that's what is listed on this profile.

It is probable that William is the son of Benjamin and Nancy Britt. They are only a few pages apart on the 1850 census of Edgefield County, South Carolina, and the ages are correct. Benjamin and William's families are the only Britt's enumerated in the county at the time.

William married Sarah, Eddie, and Amelia. His children were Levi, Larkin, William, John Wesley, Rosa, James, George W, Emma, and Nathaniel.

Based on tax records, William died around 1902.

Family

William first married Sarah, likely in Edgefield County, South Carolina. They appear together in the 1850 and 1860 censuses with their children, Levi and Larkin. Levi remained in South Carolina and Larkin traveled on to Newton County, Georgia.

It appears that Sarah died, as William next married Edie Dye in Newton County, Georgia on 7 Dec 1879. There is some confusion here. In 1870, a family consisting of William, Edith and baby William "Bret" are living in Gwinnett County. In 1880, a family of William and Edie Britz are living in nearby Newton County. Edith/Edie aged only one year between census records. These could be two different women, though I have not found an Edie Dye in the 1870 census.

In 1900 William appears in Emanuel County, Georgia, with his fourth wife, "Permelia" Amelia Parish, the widdow of John Snipes. The families had been traveling together from South Carolina to Georgia, and Amelia's half-sister, Missouri, was the wife of William's son, Larkin. According to the census, the couple had been married for 15 years (estimate 1885) and Amelia had given birth to nine children, with six still living.
