Biography

William was born 4 Jul 1882 in Spring Lake, Pierce County, Wisconsin. He was the eldest son of Sylvenus Britton and Mary Ellen Yates. He passed away on 22 May 1964 in Elmwood, Pierce County, Wisconsin. His middle name is taken from his maternal grandfather, Rhuny Yates. The name has been spelled so many different ways over the years, with gr. uncle Bill's being the last incarnation.

He is with his parents and siblings in the 1900 federal census. [1]

On 16 Dec 1903 in Pierce County, Wisconsin, William married Bessie Maud Greer. [2]

William and Bessie spent most of their life living in Pierce County, Wisconsin, not far from their birth places.[3][4][5][6]

William registered for both WWI and WWII, although he never served.[7][8]

William and Bessie had one son, William Claire Britton 1907-1978. I have pictures of all of them. One of my favorites is in their first car, very early 1910s. They all had on the dusters, gloves and the goggles. They liked to dress nicely, especially Claire, he was always a fashion plate kind of guy. Bessie doted on him as her only child. Claire never married.

Bill died 22 May 1964 in Pierce County, Wisconsin[9]

Both Bill and Bessie are buried in the Poplar Hill Cemetery in Elmwood, Pierce County, Wisconsin. (It's a very pretty cemetery on top of a hill, looking down at the (very) small town of Elmwood and a small creek that runs through it. In the fall, the leaves of the trees are on fire)[10]
