Thomas Henry (Henry) Broad was the son of Nicholas Broad, a farmer living at Carlogas, and his wife Margaret Williams. He was baptised on 29th May 1826 at St Mawgan in Pydar, Cornwall[1].
Henry grew up with two older brothers, John and Samuel. In 1841 all three lived at home, together with their parents and paternal grandparents.

Mere weeks later, Henry, Elizabeth and their two young children departed from Plymouth, Devon on 30th July[4], on the barque Lysander, as assisted emigrants to South Australia. They arrived at Port Adelaide on 20th November 1851[5].
Son John was born on 12th September 1852 in the Burra district. His birth was notified by his mother and his father's occupation is stated as gold digger[7]. Although no record of Henry's passage to Victoria can be found, it is possible that Henry, like many other South Australian men, went off to the Victorian goldfields at this time.
Obituary states he went to the Victorian gold fields for a year, made a little money and on his return started sheep farming at Sod Hut, about eight miles from Burra. He stayed there about 20 years. [8]
