Biography

Edward was born in 1672 in Wales. He was the son of Thomas and Ann Broaddus.

He married Dollwyddelan Gwynn in about 1713 in Gloucester County, Virginia. They were the parents of Thomas, Richard, Dorothy, and Elinor.

He was widowed between 1721 and 1730.

He married Mary Shipley between 1721 and 1730 in Matthews County, Virginia. They were the parents of William, James C., Elizabeth, John, Shipley, Dolly, Broaddus, and Robert (Robin).

His surname was probably originally Broadhurst, prior to his immigration from Wales to the Colony of Virginia in 1705. When he immigrated, he originally settled on Gwynn's Island in the Piankitank River in Matthews County, near the confluence of the Rappahanock River. He later moved to King & Queen County (now Caroline County) in 1715, and purchased a farm there, where he lived for the rest of his life.

He died in 1749 in King and Queen County, Virginia.

According to the book, "A History of the Broaddus Family," by A. Broaddus, 1888 (FHL#0896911 item 4) p. 27: "Edward Broaddus appears to have been a sober, plodding, laborious man, who, by industry and economy, accumulated sufficient property to give his children a start in the world."

In, "Merchant's Account Book, King and Queen Co., VA, 1750-51," reprinted in "Magazine of Virginia Genealogy", Feb., May and Aug. 1990: "Items charged to Edward included "fine clothing", "nails", "paper", and "girls pumps". He made payments both in cash and with tobacco.

Broaddus-3 and Broaddus-23 appear to represent the same person because: Check out Broaddus-23 - I believe Dollwyddolar was the first wife, Mary Shipley being the second.
