George was born in 1856^[1] in Spaldington, Yorkshire, England, where he lived with his parents, George and Elizabeth, in 1861.^[2]

At the time of the 1871 census, George worked as a farm servant for the Boast family in Spaldington.^[3]

He married Grace Falkingham in Bubwith, Yorkshire, in 1877.^[4][5] The family lived in Spaldington in 1881, when George was an agricultural labourer.^[6]

By 1891 they had moved to Eastrington, Yorkshire, and George worked as a railway platelayer.^[7][8] In 1911 George and Grace and their daughter Elsie lived in Blacktoft, Yorkshire.^[9]
