Biography

Jane Brockway was the daughter of Wolston Brockway and his first wife, Anna Brooks. She is called "of Lyme" at her marriage to Joseph Gates II in East Haddam, CT, 13 Aug. 1772.

Jane Gates is mentioned in the will of her father, probated 1789 Cheshire, New Hampshire and is presumed to be alive when will accounts were accepted and disbursements scheduled in 1792. The date and place of her death are not known, and her death may have occurred before the family move to Oneida County, NY or after.

As is often the case, we find interesting connections between families ... Jane Brockway, daughter of Wolston Brockway; granddaughter of John Brockway & Mary Huntley, and great grandaughter of Aaron Huntley, Sr, married Joseph Gates II.

Joseph Gates II's sister Lydia Gates married Solomon Mack. Solomon Mack was the son of Ebenezer Mack & Hannah Huntley, who was the daughter of Aaron Huntly Jr and the great granddaughter of Aaron Huntley Sr.

Siblings Joseph and Lydia Gates married second cousins Jane Brockway and Solomon Mack.

Jane Brockway, Brockway-42, is mentioned by name, Jane Gates, in her father Wolston's will in 1789, Surry, Cheshire, NH. She was still alive in 1791 when disbursments were made. Another daughter of Jane and Joseph Gates, Beulah b. 1789, has been found, although she is not recorded in East Haddam records as others were. Her existence and proof of family connection is found in the will of Caroline Gates, an unmarried daughter of Joseph and Jane's son Joseph and his wife Dulcena Stewart.
Brockway-42 and Brockway-349 are not ready to be merged because: Jane Brockway and Joseph Gates II had a son Eliphas / Eliphaz b 18 Apr. 1788 East Haddam, CT, as recorded in CT birth records available on line. While he is not my ancestor, my ancestor, Eliphaz B. Gates b. 1807 to Nathan S. and Betsey Burnham Gates, was named for this younger brother of Nathan. His mother, Jane Brockway, his mother could not have d. in 1884. According to the same birth records, Jane and Joseph II also had a daughter Hannah b. 6 Mar 1886. The death record for Jane Brockway is what I believe is in error. I have not ever seen a substantiated death date for her, nor have I seen a substantiated remarriage date for Joseph II, although some have said he later married Mehitable Warner. Joseph II is shown to have a woman appropriate age to be a wife living with him in the early census records of Oneida Co. NY, but who that wife is, I do not know.
Brockway-42 and Brockway-349 appear to represent the same person because: same marriage, birth is one year off, probably due to Old style vs new style
