Eureka Rebellion

Biography

The original Eureka Flag.
John Brodhurst was involved in events associated with the Eureka Rebellion at Ballarat.

John was born in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, on 9 June 1830, the son of John Edward Brodhurst and Harriett Westby Hirst[1]

John went to school at Rugby in 1843[2]

John Edward Broadhurst: bought a commission as Ensign.

His school attendance & purchase of a military commission suggest his family must have been financially well off by English standards.

"40th- Ensign George Owen Bowdler, to be Lieutenant by purchase, vice Hibbert, who retires, Sept. 18; John Edward Broadhurst, Gent., to be Ensign, by purchase, vice Wise, promoted, Sept. 17; William O'Hara, Gent., to be Ensign, by purchase, vice Pinckney, promoted, Sept. 18."[3].

The 40th was then stationed in Dublin.

John arrived in Australia with the 40th regiment in November 1852 aboard the HMS Vulcan.

"SHIPPING INTELLIGENCE
ARRIVAL.
November 10. -H.M.S Vulcan, 9 guns, Commander B Von Donop, from Melbourne 5th instant.
Passengers-
Captain Casey, Lieut, Broadhurst, Ensign Buckle, and 100 rank and file of the 40th Regiment." [4]

He is recorded July 1854 (again) arriving at Melbourne on the ship 'London' which departed Newcastle, New South Wales.

"CLEARANCES.
July 8.—London (s.), 800 tons, Captain Watts, for Melbourne.
Passengers—Lieutenants Brodhurst, and B. Bowdler, Mr. Hodham, H.M. 40th Regiment, ..."[5][6].

John Edward Brodhurst was present for the Eureka incident with the 40th regiment in the autumn of 1854. He was recorded as serving at the preceding Bentley's Eureka Hotel fire. [7] [8]

Lieutenant Broadhurst and men of the 40th Regiment were sent to the Meeting at Bentley's Eureka Hotel by Commissioner Roobert Rede, who was epecting trouble. Broadhurst was later a witness examined during the report of the Board appointed to enquire into circumstances connected with the riot at Ballarat, and the burning of James Bentley's Eureka Hotel. [9]

1855 again John purchased another rank; this time promoting to Captain[10].

John was enumerated with his regiment back in England in 1861 [11].

John married in 1868[12]

John was enumerated with his wife, daughter and servants in London in 1891 [13]

John passed away in 1899 [14] [15]
