William Thomas Brodie
|My Brodie Family
Like Peter (Brodie-65), my Father (James) did not say much about WW II. He participated in The D-Day Invasion. He was a Paratrooper. He was dropped over Normandy and then fought his way on the ground to Berlin. The Photo on his Profile is of Dad in Berlin in 1945. After the War James returned to his home in San Francisco, CA. Mom was in the Navy and she was based there. She (Eugenia) was born and raised in Louisville, KY. Eugenia was attending Dartmouth College before She joined the Navy. My Parents were married in Louisville. Both of my oldest Brothers were Born there, Steven William and James Michael. James Michael passed away at 5 months old. After his death, My Parents moved back to San Francisco. As James' Father was an Ironworker, he became on too.
James' Father William Thomas was born in San Francisco in 1893. His Sister (Mary) was born the follwing year. His Mother (Margaret Hogan) died in complications with Mary's childbirth. A common situation at that time. His Father (Robert William) wasn't ready for two children under two. William and Mary went to live with their Maternal Grandparents. The Hogan's had emigrated from Ireland to San Francisco around 1868. I assume that William attended Catholic Schools because of his having spent his teen years in a Jesuit Seminary. William had contemplated becoming a Catholic Priest. I am glad he didn't. That would have been the end of my story. He met Ann Montegue Murphey and had three children. James Robert (my Dad), Cecilia Margaret and John Thomas. William Thomas was a gang leader on the construction of The Golden Gate Bridge and the San Francisco/Oakland Bay Bridge. He retired in 1962.
His Father, Robert William, I do not much know much about other than what my Father had written about him. He was born around 1865 in Winnipeg, Canada. He emigrated to California around the late 1880's. My Father's paperwork said he worked as a Bartender in San Francisco. That same paperwork said that Robert William stayed in the area for a while after his wife died. Then I do not know.Dad's paperwork had no further information. I have only able to get scant information on him. I have some Photos of people in Winnipeg that my Aunt and Sister verify to be of Robert's Mother, Brother, Sister and other relatives. There was no photo of Robert. These photos are dated early 1900's. My Aunt vivisited Winnipeg before WW II and does not have the best memory of it at 81.
From those Photos I was able to find information regarding some those people that did show a link to Robert William. It came from Canadian Census of 1870. I can not find enough online information to definately state these people to Robert's Profile. Robert William's Father is said to be a William born in Canada. That William's Father, First Name Unknown, born in 1818 in Scotland. I need to keep looking on emigration to Canada lists and see if I can find more about William. How it goes from here has not been tied up yet.
I do know through DNA testing and comparison that I am a descendant of David Brodie of Brodie born in 1553. I have gone to his tree to see if I could trace a descendant of his to me. No such luck.
James Robert, who was given his middle name for his Grandfather, went on to have ten more children after he and Eugenia moved to California. All of those children were born in Oakland, California. I am the third living child born in California. The Family has lived in Castro Valley, Oakland and Berkely (During the Bulk of the Sixties) California. From California we moved to Hawaii in 1969. There we lived in Waimanalo, Kahala, Waikiki and Pacific Heights on the Island of Oahu. My Dad and I lived in Kona on the Big Island for 6 months as the company he was working for was putting up a large resort hotel there. The Family left the Island at different times. Steve and Matt left first to go find work in Califonia, then onto Utah then Colorado. Karen married Ted Irish and moved to Bremerton, Washington. Tina Married Jerry Pringle and moved to North Carolina. I left and went to live in Ft. Collins, Colorado with Matt who was there at that time. Kathy Married Mark Liberacki and moved to Michigan. The rest of the Family moved to Denver, Colorado as my Dad was wanted to work on one of the Buildings going up in the early 1980's. Some of the Family chose to stay in Colorado when my Dad was transferred to the home office in Phoenix. By that time he was Chief Operating Officer of the Company. A lot of us ended up living in Phoenix. Karen divorced Ted and moved in with Mom and Dad with her twins, Keo and Alina. I was out on the road and ended up there. Janet, Sue and Mark left Denver at different times and moved to Phoenix. For a while my Dad worked in Tucson. While he was here in Tucson I moved here to attend Pima Community College. I had been working in Restaurants since 1971 and wanted to do something else. I studied to be a social worker. While I was taking classes I gained Fuill Time Employment at Pima. 30 years later and I still work there. we are trying to do away with the XXX Veterans categories and replace them with an actual unit or branch of service.
i cannot see anything indicating his service, but if you know, can you please replace
Category: World War II Veterans and Category: US Army
Category: World War II, United States Army
if you know his division or regiment we are also in the process of creating those. look into the category from above, and if you see his unit, use that instead of the more generic, United States Army
you could also add
Category: Battle of Normandy / D-Day
we have several other battles created, if you know his, check them at
Category: World War II
and medals that might be added at http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Military_Decorations%2C_United_States_of_America
