Was Archibald a Civil Servant? This link shows an Archibald Douglas Brodie who passed the entrance exam in 1904. This does not mean he is the same, yet. I will use this to help further research^[1]

Did Archibald work his way through school. I found a reference to an Archibald Douglas Brodie who graduated with a LL B in 1911.

Archibald Douglas Brodie was a barrister & solicitor and one time partner in the current Whanganui, New Zealand law firm Treadwell & Gordon. Treadwell & Gordon: The name “Barnicoat Treadwell Gordon” was still used by 1914; AD Brodie and HM Keesing joined the firm at some time after this, when the Barnicoat name was finally dropped. The firm was once named Treadwell, Gordon & Brodie. Archibald had a reputation for his spirited defence of his clients. His younger brother brother Captain Henry George Brodie, was also a barrister & solicitor, practising with Fell and Harley Solicitors in both Auckland & Nelson, NZ. Archibald was also blind in his left eye. Notice his caricature, painted by a famous NZ artist and his photograph, are both with him looking to his right. In the years before his last photograph was taken by his eldest grandson, Archibald spoke mainly Latin & loved his scotch whiskey. He predeceased his wife by 20 years.
