Maria Catherina Jacoba Broekman was born March 1850 in Cape Town, South Africa, to Johan Friedrich Broekman and Sara Johanna Karsten. ^{[1] [2]}

First marriage

Maria Catherine Broekman married John Fullard Smith (before 1875)

They had five children (four daughters and one son):

• Sara Eliza (Smith) Mason, b1875
• Edwin John Smith, b 1877
• Edith May (Smith) Ramsey, b1880
• Minnie (Smith) Southall b 1882
• Jeanette Elizabeth (Nettie) (Smith) Curtis b 1885^[3]

John Fullard Smith went missing in the Kimberley. After seven years (or more) (around 1892) he was declared deceased and Maria remarried Charles Allen & then, after Charles' death, Henry Machan.

Charles died 10 Oct 1905 aged 37 at Rondelesch Cottage Hospital, Cape District
