Thomas was probably born in the early 1520's, estimated from the birth of his first known child in 1548.
His father, also Thomas, built the family home Newhouse in Huddersfield about 1550. The house is a listed building and the listing gives some details of the family's dates and descent.[1] This Thomas born c. 1521 would be Thomas Brooke II by the numbering used in the listing.
According to a published family pedigree, Thomas married Jennet Hirst, daughter of John Hirst of Greenhead in Huddersfield.[2] They had children Katherine, Thomas, and Edmund.
In a property deed of 12 October 1585 signed by his son, Thomas is mentioned as "Thomas Brook, senior, of the same [Newhouse], tanner".[3]
Thomas died in 1588 and was buried at Huddersfield on 27 April 1588, "Thomas Brook, Newhouse".[4][5]
Research Notes
The death place was given as Silkstone 27 April 1588. There are no burials for a Thomas Brooke in Silkstone 1588 or near, but there is a burial on that exact date in his home parish of Huddersfield. Thomas Brooke of Newhouse, Huddersfield, had connections with Silkstone; a Roger Addy of Silkstone, in his will dated 25 July 1599, mentions "the tenement wherein I now dwell (demised by indenture from Thomas Brook, of Newhouse, for a term of nineteen years)".[6] The published family pedigree referred to above is entitled "Pedigree of the family of Brooke of Newhouse in the Parish of Huddersfield, and Dodworth in the Parish of Silkstone, in the West Riding of Yorkshire".
