Biography

Margaret Brooke was daughter of Sir Richard Brooke of London, and his wife, Anne Ledes. [1]

She married firstly John Glegg of Gaiton (Probably Gayton in Staffordshire). [2]

Her second husband whom she married by 1537, was widower, William Worwood, [2] son of John Whorwood of Compton in Staffordshire, and his wife, Elizabeth Corbyn. [1] They were parents of a daughter, Margaret. [1] William died on the 28th of May 1545, having written his will the day before. [1]

William Sheldon of Beoley in Worcestershire, was Margaret's third husband. [2] [3]

She passed away in 1589.

Research notes

This surname is generally held to be Brooke. She was William Sheldon's second wife by whom he had no issue. She had been married previously also, to William Whorwood, Attorney-general to King Henry VIII, by whom she had two children. St. Thomas The Martyr's church, in which she was interred, was destroyed in the Great Fire of London. Said to be aged 80 at death.[4]

Margaret Broke was the daughter of Richard Broke, M.P. Margaret Broke married 1stly (as his 2nd wife) William Whorwood [Horwood, or Harward] of the Middle Temple, London, and Putney, Surrey, M.P. Sir William Whorwood died 28 May 1545, and his widow remarried, as his 2nd wife, William Sheldon of Weston and Beoley, MP.

"Ralph Sheldon of Aberton, co Worcester, to whom his brother William Sheldon gave all his lands - - died 21st December 1546."

"2nd wife Margaret daughter of Sir Richard Brooke Lord Chief Baron of the Exchequer and Relict of Sir William Thorwood Attorney General died in 1589 aged 80 without issue buried in St Thomas the Apostle London."
