Biography

John Brooke was born in 1805. His parents were Benjamin Brooke andSarah Midgley of Spen. He was christened on 28 April 1805 at Birstall, Yorkshire. [1]

John married Nancy Hartley on 23 May 1825 at Heckmondwike, Birstall, Yorkshire. [2]

John was a Stone Mason in 1851, living with his wife Nancy, and children Ann 21, Amos 18, Sarah 16, Joseph 14 and Hartley 11. He was recorded as being born at Gomersal.[3]

In 1861, he was living at Little Gomersal Lane, Spen, and was a Journeyman Stone mason. His wife Nanny (Nancy) was aged 57, born Gomersal. Also in the household were his children Ann, aged 34, Sarah aged 25, and Hartley aged 21, all born at Spen, and his granddaughers Caroline aged 6 and Eliza Ann aged 1. [4]

Research Notes

This John Brooke is considered to be the husband of Nancy Hartley, rather than John Brooke. The reasons for this are:

1. His family were living at Spen when he was born. The family of the other John Brooke were living at Drighlington. All the census records show that John Brook who married Nancy Hartley, was born at Spen or Gomersal.
2. John's father Benjamin was a Stone Mason.
