Biography

Teddy Brooks was born about 1830 in Lancashire, the first son of George Brooks and Alice Isherwood. He was baptised at Holcombe, Lancashire on 4 January 1830.^[1] He had 4 siblings.^[2]

In 1841, Teddy (11) is recorded at Nuttall, Bury, Lancashire^[2] with his parents, George (c30) and Alice (c30), brothers, Joseph (9), John (7), James (3), and sister Mary (0).

In 1851, Teddy (21, Power Loom Weaver) is recorded at Walmersley Cum Shuttleworth, Lancashire^[3] with his parents, George (41, Farmer) and Alice (41, House Keeper), brothers, Joseph (19, Power Loom Weaver), John (16, Spinner Cotton), James (13, Weaver), and sister Mary Ann (10, Scholar).

Teddy Brooks, son of George Brooks and Alice Isherwood, married Elizabeth Leach, daughter of James Leach and Betty Makens, at St. Pauls, Bury on 6 May 1854.^[4][5] They had 10 children: Alice Jackson (1854-?); Elizabeth Andrew (1855-1837); Phoebe Oliphant (1857-1935); Sarah Pryor (1860-1835); Adelaide Dean (1861-1943); George; William; Louisa Sefton (1871-1934); Emilie Green (1873-?); and James (1877-1877).

In 1856, Teddy migrated to Australia, aboard the "Ben Nevis",^[6] with his wife, Elizabeth, and their second daughter, Elizabeth. Teddy is recorded as being able to "Read" and "Write". Elizabeth and Teddy left their elder daughter, Alice, behind to be raised by Teddy's parents. It is interesting to speculate on the pressures that led to them deciding to split their family this way.

Teddy Brooks passed away on 12 May 1901 in Tamworth, NSW.^[7] He was survived by his wife Elizabeth, 9 children,^[8] and at least 22 grandchildren^[8]
