Captain Henry Brooks was a fishing and cargo boat captain in the Newfoundland fishing fleet. His father was captain Nathaniel Brooks, and Henry and his brothers would have served time under their father ferrying Irish seaman and cargo to the Newfoundland fishing fleet from Ireland and the west country of England in the middle of the 18th century.
Henry married Honoria Hall the daughter of Joseph Hall the vicar of Salcombe Regis in Devon and his wife Honoria Burchinshaw. They were married by special licence on the 5th of March 1854 at St Mary Arches in nearby Exeter.
They would go on to have at least 7 children. The famous or infamous convict ship captain Richard Brooks is listed as the fifth of these children.
