Biography

William Swett Brooks was probably born about 1772, the son of William Brooks and his second wife, Hannah Swett. William, Jr. is named in his father's 1788 will, as "William Swett, begotten of the body of Hannah Swett." [1] William was a minor (under 21) when his father died, and he chose as his guardian a man named Thomas Holladay. [2] He was listed as taxable in Southampton in 1789, meaning he was at least 16, and that same year he sold the land that his father had patented in 1742 [3] for 55 pounds to a man named William Vaughan.
