LaFayette Sun - August 31, 1938 "TOM BROOKS DIES AS GRAY LINE IS THINNED BY ONE Member of Company K, Regiment Eight, under General Prathers is next to last to surrender. Thomas Jefferson Brooks age 91 years last November surrendered last Thursday morning about 6:45 a.m. o'clock to the Grim Reaper, following a serious illness of several weeks at the home of a daughter, Mrs. A. J. Gilbert, of LaFayette. The Southern Confederate soldier had been in failing health for the past several months. His passing leaves only one survivor of the Civil War in Chambers Co.. The deceased was born and reared on what is now known as the Schuessler dairy farm in Beat 9 and for a long period of years made that community in Chambers Co. home. He was actively interested in the affairs of his community and Co.. When he was two years of age his father died leaving him to be reared by an aunt and other members of his family. At age 18 he enlisted in the Southern Cause and was assigned to Company K, eighth regiment, under General Prather. He served with distinction and was honorably discharged following cessation of the bloody activities of the civil strife. He returned home to knit again the tangled and fraggle (sic) ends of the home ties he left a few years before. He again took up residence in the Knight's Mill community, where he lived until the death of his wife about 30 years ago. Since that time, he had lived comfortable with members of his family, here and elsewhere. Funeral services were held last Friday morning at Antioch Baptist Church where in early life he became a member. Reverend V. M. Gardner, pastor of the LaFayette Baptist Church was the officiating minister. Interment was in the family burying plot near by the church. Surviving are three daughters; Mrs. A. J. Gilbert, LaFayette, Mrs. Pierce Rearden, West Point and Mrs. Dora Lovelace, Antioch, Troup Co., Ga., Tom Brooks, address unknown, Olin Brooks, LaFayette, and Jeff Brooks, Atlanta."
