Biography

Campbell Brooks was born in Appalachia, in Virginia.
Sergeant Campbell Brooks served in the United States Civil War.

Campbell Coleman Brooks was born in 26 December1845 in Tazewell County, Virginia. He was the son of Samuel Brooks and Melender Cyphers[1]

In 1850 Campbell is a small child living with his parents, Samuel W. Brooks and Melender Mallie Cyphers Brooks. He has 4 brothers and sisters. Samuel W. Brooks occupation is Saddler, an occupation that Samuel taught to his sons, Thomas, Campbell and Oscar.[2]

The 1860 census has the family living in Kentucky. Samuel and son Thomas are working as saddlers.[3]

In 1861,sixteen year old Campbell Coleman Brooks joins the war as a Confederate soldier for Virginia, Company H, 22nd Cavalry Regiment, rank is Sergeant.[4]

After the war Campbell returns home to live with his parents and work as a saddler.[5]

Campbell Coleman Brooks married Sarah Ann Steele in September 1870 Lee Co., Virginia.[6]

The June 1880 Lee County, Virginia lists C. C. Brooks and wife Sarah A. and 5 of their children. Campbell Coleman works as a Tanner.[7]

Campbell is listed as C.C. Brooks with wife Sarah Brooks and four of their children on the 1900 census. Also living with them is Campbell's mother 80 year old Melander Brooks.[8]

In 1910 Campbell and Sarah reside in Rose Hill, Lee, Virginia. Living with them are son Ralph Brooks, 19; Kittie P. Brooks, 15 and John Farmer, a 10 year old foster son. Campbell and Sarah have had 11 children, 9 are living.[9]

The census of 1920 lists Campbell as Coleman and has a few additions to the household. Kittie Pearl Brooks, her husband Alex Keys and 3 of their children are living with Campbell Coleman and Sarah. Sarah is 67, Campbell is 74 and owns his home.[10]

In 1930 Campbell is listed as Colman C. Brooks and his occupation is general farming. Sarah is 78 years old and keeping house. The household includes Kittie and Alex Keys and their 8 children. Alex works the farm with his father-in-law.[11]

On 18 November 1930 Campbell C. Brooks files with the Deputy Clerk of Lee County, Virginia, a Pension Application for a Disabled Confederate Soldier. It is approved 1 March 1931.[12]

Cam C. Brooks passes away in 25 March 1933 from Apoplexy and is buried in the Brooks Cemetery, Rose Hill, Lee Co., Virginia next to his wife Sarah Ann.[13][14]
