Biography

This is the profile for Isaac Brooks who married Miriam Daniels in Woburn, Massachusetts on January 10, 1665/6 and had children there in 1667-1673.

Parentage; Date and Place of Birth

Isaac was the son of Henry Brooks and his unknown first wife. His paternal parentage is established by, among other things, a reference in Henry Brooks' will to his son Isaac and Isaac's sons Isaac and Henry and daughter Mirriam.[1] Isaac's maternal parentage is based on Henry Brooks' wife around the time of Isaac's estimated date of birth.[2]

Based on a deposition that Isaac gave in April 1668 in which he stated that he was about 25 and a deposition that he gave in 1670 in which he stated that he was aged 27, Isaac was probably born about 1643.[3]

Since Isaac's father, Henry Brooks, lived in Concord, Massachusetts from 1639 to about 1650,[4] Isaac was presumably born in Concord.

Marriage and Children

Isaac married Miriam Daniels in Woburn, Massachusetts on January 10, 1665/6.[5][6]

Isaac and Miriam had the following children, all born in Woburn:

  1. Sarah, b. May 14, 1667,[7][3] d. July 2, 1667 in Woburn[8][3]
  2. Miriam, b. May 29, 1668,[9][10][3] died young[3]
  3. Isaac, b. August 13, 1669[11][10][3]
  4. Henry, b. October 4, 1671[12][10][3]
  5. Miriam, b. December 16, 1673,[13][10][3] m. Henry Merry/Merrow (son of Henry Merrow of Reading and Woburn)[3]

Public Life

Isaac was one of two persons present when Samuel Converse was killed by a waterwheel at Converse's father's mill in Woburn in 1670.[3]

In 1674, Isaac was engaged by the town of Woburn to set traps for wolves and was paid by the town for killing wolves in 1676 and 1677.[14]

Isaac was a cavalryman in King Philip's War in 1675-1676 and was appointed as quartermaster of the "Three County Troop" in 1677.[3]

When smallpox hit Woburn in 1678-1679, among those inflicted were Isaac, his three living children, and John Cutler Sr, who was then residing with Isaac's family, with John Cutler Sr dying from the disease.[15]

Isaac was included in the Woburn town tax lists of 1684 and 1685.[3]

Death

Isaac died in Woburn on September 8, 1686.[16][3]

Research Notes

A wikitree contributor stated thatt the best material on this family, including all of John Brooks Threlfall's material and an excellent biography of Isaac Brooks, was compiled by Christopher Hapgood Brooks and was maintained as part of his Tributaries: Genealogies of the Brooks Families of New England.
