Biography

Josephine Ann Brooks Smith was born about 1875 in Alabama. At this time, her parents are unknown.

In about 1890, she married Jacob Breckinridge Smith.

According to the 1900 Census, Josephine Smith was living in Marshall County, Alabama with her husband and three children: James T. Smith, Jacob W. Smith, and Mary Smith. Her mother-in-law, Elizabeth Snyder Smith, was also living in the household. According to this census, Josephine was born about 1875 in Alabama, and she and Jacob Smith had been married about 10 years. This census recorded that she had six children, but only three of them were alive at the time of the census. The birthplaces of her parents were listed as Alabama.

Josephine Brooks Smith passed away after the 1900 census and before 15 Aug 1906 when Jacob married has second wife, Eliza Ellen Crawford Brookshire. She most likely passed away in either Georgia or Alabama as the last known record of her was in Marshall County, Alabama in 1900, and Jacob married his second wife, Eliza Ellen Crawford Brookshire, in Fulton County, Georgia.

Her name was mentioned in the will of Jacob Breckinridge Smith in which he left equal parts of his estate to his children by Josephine Ann Brooks and Eliza Ellen Crawford Smith and his stepchildren by Eliza Ellen Crawford Smith.

There are two 1900 census sources. Josephine Brooks married in about 1900 (exact date unknown), so it is possible she appeared on the census in her father's household and in her husband's household. More research needs to be done to determine whether this is true or not. There is little documentation about Josephine Brooks that has been found to date. We know her birth family because her sister married her husband's nephew.

Josephine is 25 degrees from Cari Starosta, 22 degrees from Marie-Antoinette d'Autriche and 19 degrees from Henry VIII of England on our single family tree. Login to find your connection.
