Elisha Brooks was a native of the " Green Mountain" state, was reared in St. Lawrence county, N. Y., and died in Oakfield, Mich., at the age of eighty-four years. In 1855 he came from Ohio to Michigan and bought eighty acres of land in Ionia county, which he soon traded for forty acres on the township line of Grattan and Oakfield, Kent county. At the date of his settlement in Michigan the country was in a wild state, and bears, deer, and wolves were frequently seen. Elisha Brooks was a pioneer of Ohio, having lived there about twenty years. His brother, David Brooks, served as a soldier in the war of 1812. [1]
He married Maria Cook and had fourteen children.
In 1850 The US Federal Census find Elisha Brooks, age 53 in Independence, Cuyahoga, Ohio. He is living with a wife Maria Brooks, age 49 (abt 1801) and his children, Armilly Brooks 14, Samuel J Brooks 10, Phineas Brooks 8, Josephine Brooks 6, Lucy Brooks 16, and Samuel A Brooks age 10. Samuel A (or) Samuel (J) is actually named Lemuel, twin of Samuel.
1860 finds Elisha age 73, in Oakfield, Kent Michigan according to the 1860 census. With him are his (inferred) wife, Mariah, age 59, Lemuel 20, Samuel 20 and Josephine aged 15. Phineus age 18, is living with another family working (William and Sarah Lessiter -transcription error?) as a farm laborer. His age is 10 years off at this point but I feel confident based on the same children in the home it is the correct family.
1870 Elisha Brooks is still living in Oakfield, Kent, Michigan with his son Lemuel age 29, Lemuel's wife Cornelia age 26 and their son Edwin who was born in July of the census year and is listed at 11 months. As the census was taken the second day of July we can infer that Edwin was born the previous year of 1869.
