Sometime between 1900 and 1906, Eliza's first husband, Levi Brookshire, died. She was left alone with three small children to care for. Sadly none of her family or Levi's family could or would help her, and she ended up placing her children into an orphanage. In 1906, she married Jacob Breckinridge Smith, and after they were married, they went to the orphanage to get her children and bring them home. Jacob had four children of his own, so they started out with seven children. They later had three children of their own.

This was told to me by my grand-aunt, Lydia Brookshire, who was one of the children that Eliza was forced to place into an orphanage. Sadly, Aunt Liddie had a difficult time forgiving her mother for placing her in the orphanage even though she came back to get her children.
