  • Fact: http://familysearch.org/v1/LifeSketch Famed Civil War figure known as "French Marie", she was the vivandiere for the 27th Pennsylvania Infantry and the 114th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War.

At the turn of the century, 66-year-old Marie is living alone in Baldwin Township, Pennsylvania. [2]

Tragically, Marie took her own life on 14 May 1901 by drinking "paris green," a pesticide and paint pigment. [3] She was buried in the Saint Paul's Lutheran Cemetery. Marie's grave had been unmarked for several decades, until in 1988 a stone was erected and then dedicated in a ceremony at the cemetery on Lafferty Hill in Baldwin, Pennsylvania on the outskirts of Pittsburgh.[4]
