Biography

Mary Ann was born in 1862. She was the daughter of William Broughan and Mary Aroa. [1]She passed away in 1886 age 24 [2]

A YOUNG WOMAN HANGS HERSELF Yesterday afternoon at five o'clock information was given to the police that Mary Ann Broughan, the housekeeper at Hammerich's hotel, Greytown, had committed suicide by suspending herself from a beam across the roof of a dairy in the hotel. It appears from the information given to our reporter that the young woman was missing about the time when it was necessary to prepare the evening meal, and had not been seen for about one hour and a half prior to that time, It was at first thought that possibly she had retired to her own room, and consequently the barmaid proceeded thither to call her. but not finding her in that room she (the barmaid, Mrs Smith) informed Mr Hammerich of the fact when search was made throughout the premises until it was ultimately found that the door of the dairy was locked and a piece of newspaper pinned across the window. Mr Hammerich, with the assistance of his cousin, Mr Lesser, then proceeded to break open the door with an axe, when to their horror , they found the housekeeper, as already , explained, suspended from the beam by a rope ; and although the body was warm, life was quite extinct. Mr Lesser immediately cut down the body, and the coachman, F Hayes, was despatched to Constable Eccleton who was soon on the premises, an inquest will be held to-day at 1 30 pm before Dr Spratt. coroner, and prior to the inquiry a post mortem examination will take place, ln connection with this sad case, it is reported that the deceased sent by a girl under seventeen years of age on Wednesday, to Mr St George, chemist, and endeavoured to purchase some laudanum but as she did not send sufficient reasons to satisfy Mr St George that the poison would be in safe hands, that gentleman refuted to supply her with what she desired. It also appears that yesterday soon after dinner she suddenly informed Mr Hammerich that she wished to leave his service within about an hour, and proceed by the bus to the railway station to take the train to Wellington. Mr Hammerich refused to take such a short notice, and would not settle with her, He endeavoured to persuade her to give him at least one week’s notice, as he explained that it would be exceedingly inconvenient for him to be without a person in her position as housekeeper; he asked her to give him a chance of finding another in her stead, and gave her until the next morning to reflect. This to all appearance at the time satisfied her. She than disappeared, and was not seen again alive. It is supposed that she stood on a shelf in the dairy and threw herself off. Mr Hammerich is a widower, and has always been hold in high esteem among his fellow settlers in the Wairarapa, having resided in Greytown for many years. Much sympathy is felt for him under the distressing circumstances. No cause has shown yet which might have lead to the perpetration of the sad act. Deceased has friends at Kaikoura [3]
