Biography

Edward Thomas "Tom" Broughton Jr. was born April 3, 1834 to Edward Thomas Broughton and his wife Rachel Winborne (Walker) Broughton. During his childhood, he would move with his parents and siblings from Monroe County Alabama to Ouachita County, Arkansas in 1842 then to Jasper County, Texas in 1847. [1] Edward is found on the United States Census of 1850, at the age of 16 years, living at home with his parents in Cherokee county, Texas. [2]

Edward married Mary Elizabeth "Mollie" Douglas, a daughter of Alexander Douglas II and Margaret Cowsar, "E.T. Broughton" and Mary E Broughton are found on the United States census of 1860, living in Kaufman, Kaufman county, Texas, with their three year old son, Prentess. Mary was also born in Alabama, and Prentess in Texas. [3]

On October 7, 1861, Edward Thomas Broughton, Jr. joined the Confederate States Army, where he served as a Captain of Company C, 7th Texas Infantry Regiment for the duration of the American Civil War, resigning his commission in March of 1865. [4]

Captain Broughton died February 11, 1874, at the age of 39 years, in Sherman, Grayson county, Texas and is buried in the Oakwood Cemetery, in Tyler, Smith county, Texas. There are photographs of him on his Find A Grave memorial. [5]

Researchers Notes

There is a Historical Marker honoring E.T. Broughton at the intersection of Highway 90 and Farm to Market Road FM1836, in Prairieville, Texas. It contains a brief bio for Edward Thomas Broughton which is transcribed on his Find A Grave Memorial.
