MacBryde was born on 9 November 1826 in Lochmaben, Dumfries. He is the son of Peter Broun and Caroline Simpson.

IMMIGRATION. 1829. On the PARMELIA.

(Jun 1829). IMMIGRATION. It is the Parmelia, (bark) and not the Sulphur, (bomb) in which Captain Stirling has come out to Swan River. That vessel, (J. F, Luscombe, from London 8th Feb.) arrived at Cape town the 16th April, and was to stop only a very few days. Among the gentlemen on board, who have come out passengers with colonial appointments, were Mr. Brown, Colonial Secretary, Drs. Simmons and Daly, Colonial Surgeons, Mr. Morgan, Mr. Stirling, Mr. Sutherland, Mr. Drummond, Mr. Mangles, and Mr. Shelton. They are all family men, and have brought out their ladies and children. There were also 4 artificers with families and servants.

OBITUARY. We regret to announce the demise on Friday last of Mr. McBryde Broun, the eldest son of the late Mr. Peter Broun, first Colonial Secretary of the colony. The deceased for many years filled the office of Registrar in the Convict Department. His remains were followed to the Perth Cemetery on Saturday afternoon by a large body of citizens, Oddfellows of the New Swan and City of Perth Lodges, and the volunteers of the Metropolitan and Fremantle corps.

Secretary Swan River Colony (known as Brown until 1844). Was granted 9626 acres selected at "Coulston" Bt. "Bassendean" His duties as Sec. & Clerk of the Leg. Council, Registrar & Colonial Treasurer made him second in importance to the Governor. The 178 volumes of official correspondence (in Battye Library) cover the period of his duties until his premature death. His wife took their chd. to England 14.1.1844 per Napoleon returning 6.1846 per John Bagshaw. His widow sailed for England 14.9.1848 per Hindoo burnt to the waterline destroying the diaries & papers she proposed publishing. There was no prospect of a pension & the family were in straitened circumstances "Bassendean" having been sold to cover commitments. Commemorated in 1979 in a brass pavement plaque Perth for year 1844. [3]
