Biography

JOSEPH BROUSSARD is on the Wall of Names at the Acadian Memorial in St. Martinville, Louisiana, on Plaque 2, right. Listed with him is his wife Marguerite Savoie and two children: Rene and Marguerite.[1]

Joseph, dit Petit Jo Broussard, son of Joseph Broussard, dit Beausoleil, and Agnès Thibodeau, was born about 1726 in Chipoudy, Acadie.[2] During the Seven Years' War when the British decided to take Acadia from the Neutral French residents, Joseph's family and other Acadians, led by his father, Beausoleil, avoided the forced deportations of 1755 by fleeing to the woods. They endured starvation and exposure to the elements before they were eventually imprisoned at Halifax for the duration of the war.

Petit Jo had married around 1753, not long before the "grand derangement," to Anastasie LeBlanc, daughter of Rene and Anne Terriot.[3] They had two children, Rene and Anastasie Broussard. His wife, Anastasie LeBlanc, died by 1757, whether in childbirth or as a direct result of the Acadian expulsion is unknown. Their son survived the ordeal, but their daughter Anastasie did not. It is unknown whether she died with her mother, but she certainly had died by the time her father and brother immigrated to Louisiana.[1]

After their release from Halifax by the Treaty of Paris in 1763, a group of about 200 Acadians waited for Beausoleil to serve an extra year, working to earn passage to a new home. On his release, they first sailed from Halifax to Saint-Domingue (present-day Haiti), but eventually, in February 1765, they debarked at the port of New Orleans, and were granted land in the Attakapas Territory of Spanish Louisiana.[4]

Joseph married a second time around 1763, during that year of working and waiting to leave Halifax, to Marguerite Savoie; they eventually had nine children, but only the first one was born by the time they reached Louisiana in 1765.[1]

Petit Jo was living at the Attakapas Post in 1769 with his second wife, Marguerite Savoie, his son by his first marriage and three daughters by his second. The baby was named for the half-sister she never knew.[5]

In 1771 they were still living at Attakapas, Louisiana. Their son was not counted on the census, but the three girls were.[6]

By October of 1774 they were counted with six children and many more livestock.[7]
