Obituary for John Steven "Steve" Broussard

John Steven “Steve” Broussard, a lifelong coast resident, passed away in Biloxi on Tuesday, June 1, at the age of 71. He graduated from Notre Dame High School in 1967 where he was a 4-sport star before attending and graduating from Marion Institute, Marion, AL on a football scholarship. He continued his education and played football on scholarship at the University of Southern Mississippi, Hattiesburg, MS. He returned to the coast in 1972 where he was Director of the Ocean Springs Racquet Club & Spa for several years. He was drafted by the New Orleans Saints during their first season in 1975 as a punter in the exhibition games and afterward was signed by the Green Bay Packers where he played in regular-season games before returning to the coast. He also attended training camps with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in their inaugural season and the following year. Steve spent many years boxing with the Biloxi Boxing Club from a young age through his high school years and was a Golden Gloves champion many times over. Steve was inducted into the Biloxi Sports Hall of Fame in 2012, and he spent the rest of his time as a popular disc jockey bringing his love of the late ’50s, '60s, and '70s music to special events around the coast. He especially enjoyed Cruisin’ the Coast each year.

Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. J.R. Broussard, Jr. and Bette Bowden Broussard, infant niece Melissa Toche, and his sisters, Carole Broussard Williams and Marie Broussard Trochesset, all of Ocean Springs, MS.

He is survived by his daughters, Shannon Broussard Clarke Ferguson (Malcolm), Candace Broussard, both of Brandon, MS, and Madeline Broussard Nicklas of Ocean Springs, MS. He has five grandsons, Garrett Clarke, Cooper Clarke, Chase Mowrer, and Beau Bahou, all of Brandon, MS, and Grayson Nicklas of Ocean Springs, MS, and one granddaughter, Freya Hebert, also of Ocean Springs. He has four surviving sisters, Janice Broussard Bush of Gulfport, MS, Patty Broussard of Biloxi, MS, Linda Broussard, and Julie Broussard Toche (Danny) both of Ocean Springs, MS along with 8 nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at Bradford-O'Keefe Funeral Home on Howard Avenue in Biloxi on Saturday, June 19, 2021, at 2:00 pm. Friends may visit from 1:00 pm until service time.

Bradford-O’Keefe Funeral Home is honored to serve the Broussard family.[1]
