Biography

Luitzen Egberts Jan Brouwer (1881-1966) was a Dutch mathematician and philosopher, known for his work in topology, set theory, and foundations of mathematics. He received his PhD in mathematics in 1907 from the University of Amsterdam and spent most of his academic career at the University of Amsterdam.

Brouwer made significant contributions to the development of topology, particularly in the area of algebraic topology. He also developed the theory of the continuum, which deals with the concept of infinity and its relationship to mathematical objects. Brouwer is best known for his work on intuitionism, a philosophical and mathematical approach that rejects the existence of certain types of mathematical objects, such as infinite sets and the law of excluded middle.

In addition to his mathematical work, Brouwer was a philosopher who wrote extensively on the foundations of mathematics and the philosophy of science. He argued for a radical revision of the foundations of mathematics, rejecting traditional logic and set theory in favor of a more intuitive and constructive approach. His ideas had a major impact on the development of mathematics and philosophy in the 20th century.

Luitzen Egberts Jan was born in 1881. He is the son of Egbert Brouwer and Henderika Poutsma. [1]
