Biography

Jannetje Brouwer was born about 1655, probably in Amsterdam, Netherlands, the daughter of Jan Brouwer and Jannetje Jans. [1] No record of her birth or baptism has been found, but her marriage record said, "Van Amsterd.", [2] meaning that she was born in Amsterdam. When her father signed the Oath of Allegience in 1687, he said he had been in the country for 30 years, which would mean the family came around 1657. Jannetje's brother was baptized in New York on May 26 1658, so the family definitely arrived before then, and Jannetje probably wasn't born after 1656 or maybe early 1657. Her last child was born in 1699, so it's unlikely she was born much before 1655.

She married Theunis Janszen Amack on 11 Jun 1677 at the Reformed Dutch Church in Flatlands. [2] They had nine children together: [3]

  1. Aafje Theunise / Aefie Amack (bp. 17 Feb 1678 at Amersfoort, died young)
  2. Aelte Theunise Amak (b. 12 Feb 1681, bp. 13 Feb 1681 at Amersfoort, d. bt. fall 1709 and 3 Nov 1712; m. 2 Feb 1707 Jacobus Cosynsze.)
  3. Greetjie Amack (b. 13 Feb 1683, m. Albert Amerman)
  4. Jan Amack ( b. 21 Feb 1686, d. young)
  5. Jannetie Amack (b. 9 Apr 1689, bp. 21 Apr 1689 at Brooklyn
  6. Jan/John Amack ( b. 8 Jun 1691, d. bt. 23 Jan 1719/20 and 21 Jun 1721, m. Mary/Marike Jans/Johnson)
  7. Pieter Amack (b. 29 Jun 1693)
  8. Theunis Amack) (b. 9 Apr 1696, d. aft. 22 Mar 1761, m. 2 Nov 1720 Helena Laan)
  9. Stephen Aumack (b. 25 Sep 1699, d. 10 Oct [year torn], m. (1) 16 Oct 1725 Jannetje Jans, (2) 7 Nov 1767 in New Jersey Mary Heavilan)

She lived in New Amersfoort / Flatlands for most of her life. It was her residence in 1677 when she married, her husband appeared on the assessment rolls there in 1683 and 1693, took the oath of allegiance there in 1687 and appeared in a census there in 1698. She and her brother joined the church at Amersfort in July 1679. [4] Her husband also contributed to the church bell at Flatlands in 1686.

She died some time after their youngest child Stephen was born in 1699, perhaps before her husband witnessed the baptism of their first grandchild in 1705 and she wasn't listed, although the child was given her name, [5] but definitely before 19 Dec 1706 when the banns were read for her husband's second marriage.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Jannetje by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Jannetje:

Hi Paul Lee & NNS Coordinators,

I'm proposing that Jannetje (Jans) Brouwer should be added as the mother of, this PPP's, Jannetje Eyke Brouwers. The sources for this are:

Should her current last name be changed to Brouwers? Are there any records that show she used Aumack? All the records cited in this profile use Brouwer or Brouwers, except for one that uses Jans (her father's name was Jan).
