Biography

Sergeant Arthur Brown served in the United States Civil War.

Arthur Brown was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic, Post 91, Mower, LeMars, Iowa.

Arthur was born in 1838. In New York. He was the son of David Brown and Diana Sturtevant. ^[1]

His family moved to Rockford, Illinois a little after 1850.

In 1860 he was working on the farm of Hezekiah Atwood in Harlem. ^[2]

In August 1862 Arthur enlisted with Company K of the Illinos 74th Infantry. In January 1863 he was promoted to Corporal and to Sergeant in August that year. He was discharged in October 1864 due to wounds received in battle. An Iowa obituary says he lost his leg during the Battle of Lookout Mountain but that was in 1863. 1880 Census notes he lost his right leg. ^[3][4]

Arthur married Sarah A. Warner on June 25, 1867 in Illinois.^[5]

Sarah died in 1868. In 1870 he married Josephine A. Warner.^[6]

They lived in Harlem Township. The 1870 census lists him as a farmer but his obituary says he was a town collector. ^[7]

In 1872 they moved to LeMars, Iowa. He engaged in a livery business, as well as serving as alderman, postmaster and mayor. ^[8][9]

Arthur passed away in 1905.^{[10] [11][12]}
