James Hull Brown was born in about 1816 in Godalming. He was the son of Richard and Elizabeth Brown. He was christened on 9 Oct 1816 at St Peter and St Paul's Church in Godalming (Anglican). His family's address was given as High Street, and his father's occupation as clerk to Mr. Hull.
James became a tea dealer and wine merchant. He married Deborah Tiffin on 23 Feb 1843 in Godalming. Neither had been married before. Their fathers were named as Richard Brown and Charles Tiffin. The marriage may have been childless - there were no children in their household in the censuses of 1861 and 1871.
James died on 5 Nov 1875, aged 59, at his home in Godalming High Street. He was buried on 11 Nov 1875 in Nightingale Cemetery, Godalming, in the consecrated section.
Deborah died on 16 May 1888, aged 86, at her home in Godalming High Street. She was buried on 19 May 1888 with her husband.
