William was born 22 Sep 1781 and baptised 27th April 1786 Colne Engaine.[1]
He married Mary Letitia White c1811, their first child Mary Ann being born on Sept 5th 1812 and baptised in Twinstead 29th Sept 1814. His occupation at that time stated as Farmer.[2]
They lived in Pelhams at Twinstead until at least 1825 when George was Born. [3]
Pelhams was a large ancient mansion-house formerly called a manor. In 1293 it was holden under Hugh Despenser by Walter son of William de Pelham who was succeeded by his son William. It afterwards passed successively to families named Astel, Cole, Rushey, Barker Smyth, Alston and Shaen of Witham. [4]
Some time later William moved to Castle Hedingham to Augusta House which during his lifetime became a school for ladies.

A Mrs Louise Barton and her sister Miss Mary Ann Brown ran a 'High class day and boarding school' in Augusta House, next to St Nicholas until 1892. [6]
This was a a School for ladies according to various newspaper adverts. 1885-1887 “LADIES’ SCHOOL. AUGUSTA HOUSE, CASTLE HEDINGHAM. Principal— MISS CATHERINE BROWN (Late resident Head English Governess at the Empress Augusta’s School, Charlottenburg, Berlin)” [7]
