Biography

John Hume Brown was born 07 Jul 1833 and passed away on 11 Dec 1862. [1] [2]

John Hume Brown was the oldest son of John Brown and Lydia Smith. His middle name is the maiden name of his grandmother, Bathsheba Hume Smith. Hume is an old and venerable Scottish Noble family. He was born on his father's farm that straddled Owen and Morgan Counties in Indiana. He met Melinda Angeline Trowbridge after her mother moved back in with her grandparents when her father Dempsey died. They were married in Morgan County on 10 Sep 1854 by the Rev. D. M. Blankenship. Their first two children were boys, William Harvey (1855-1916) and James David (1857-1935) who were both born in Morgan County Indiana. Sometime between 1857 and 1860 the young family moved to Barkley Township, Jasper County, Indiana to begin farming. John Dempsey Brown was born on 5 June 1860 in Jasper County. Melinda died on 6 August 1860 probably as a complication of childbirth. This left John Hume Brown a widower with three small children. John joined the Union cause in the civil war in Renselear, Indiana and subscribed the oath in Company A of the 87th Indiana Volunteer Infantry in South Bend on 11 Aug 1862. The three young Brown boys returned to their grandparents farm in Owen/Morgan county. for the duration. Unfortunately John Hume Brown was one of the numerous casualties of war but not by enemy fire. He died of acute tonsillitis at Union Hospital #2 in New Albany, Floyd County, Indiana before seeing any major action.
