Biography

Mercy Brown was the daughter of Edward Brown. Her parentage is proved via the will of her grandfather, "Boaz Brown, sometime of Stow ... now an inhabitant of in Dedham", dated 14 October 1715, proved 8 May 1724, which listed the following family members: three grandchildren: Deliverance Brown, Mercy Heald and Ephraim Brown, surviving children of his son Boaz, dec'd; Boaz, Amos and Edward, children of son Edward, dec'd; granddaughters Mercy Wetherbee and Mary Brown, daughters of dec'd son Edward; grandson Nathan Stearns; his three surviving children: Thomas Brown, Mary Stearns and Mercy Everet. His son Thomas and his brother Thomas were to be co-executors, but by 29 November 1721, his brother Thomas was dead so he appointed Mr. William Wilson to act in Thomas' stead. Inventory was taken 27 May 1724. His widow Abigail was not named in his will, but she appears in probate dosuments.^[1]

Mary/Mercy married David Wetherbee^[2] probably about 1714 in Stow. They had children:

• Elizabeth, born 21 April 1715 in Stow,^[3] married ___ Hapgood, was named in David's will^[4]
• Phineas, married Betsy Whitney,^[2] was born 6 October 1716,^[3] and was named in David's will^[4]
• Mary, born 3 November 1718,^[3] married ____ Stevens, was named in David's will^[4]
• Edward, named in David's will^[4]
• David, born 28 February 1722/3,^[3] named in David's will
• Joseph, named in David's will^[4]
• Silas, named in David's will as executor^[4]
• Lydia, married ____ Brown, died before 1758 (was called deceased in David's will, her portion went to her son Samuel)^[4]

Mercy was probably living on 13 April 1758 when her husband David Wetherbee of Stow wrote his will, although he does not give her name, he does mention his wife in his will. His will was proved 26 January 1761 and listed his wife (unnamed) and his seven surviving children: sons Phineas, Edward, David, Joseph and Silas, daughters Elizabeth Hapgood and Mary Stevens. He also names a grandson, Samuel Brown, son of daughter Lydia Brown, deceased. His son Silas was named as sole executor.^[4]

Her date of death is unknown.

8 April 1766 Probate in Stow was NOT for this Mercy: it was a guardianship for a minor of the same name, daughter of Isaac, deceased.^[5]
