John was born in 1844 in Cliffe, Yorkshire, and baptised in Hemingbrough on 8 Dec 1844, his parents were Thomas and Eliza.[1][2][3] John's birth was difficult to track down as there doesn't appear to be a civil registration of it, or of any of his siblings, who according to an 1851 census [4][5] were living with their parents in Cliffe, Selby, which is a mile and a half from Hemingbrough.

John was a Wesleyan minister having commenced in 1869, studying theology in Headingly College, Leeds and Richmond College in London.[9][10] He was based in Market Harborough when he married Mary Lucy Eland in January 1874,[11] the ceremony being performed by Mary's uncle the Rev. John Cooper, who was also a Wesleyan minister.[12]
Being a Wesleyan minister meant that the next 40 or so years would be spent moving every few years to a new place as he was appointed to the various circuits.[9]
In 1881 they had moved to Edgbaston near Birmingham with 3 sons and a daughter:[13]
They had moved to Bedford, Bedfordshire by 1901 with Ethel, Sholto, Mary and Noel.[15]
Ten years later in 1911, they were living in Newport, Monmouthshire with their daughter Ethel.[16]
Rusthall Church and 1 Manor Road.
In 1919 he moved to Rusthall, Tunbridge Wells, Kent, and the 1921 census[17] shows that he was now widowed living with Mary Agatha at 1 Manor Road, which was next to what was then the Wesleyan Church.
By 1939 he had moved to 34 Grove Hill Road, Royal Tunbridge Wells, and had been living in the Tunbridge Wells area for 20 years according to his circuit list.[9] He was living there with his son Gerald who was widowed, and his daughter Mary Agatha who had never married.[18][19]
He passed away in 1941, in Tunbridge Wells, Kent. Reeves-Brown, John of 34 Grove Hill-road Tunbridge Wells died 6 December 1941 Administration (with Will) Llandudno 16 February to Mary Agatha Reeves-Brown spinster.[10][20]
Family Announcement:
REEVES-BROWN.—On Dec. 6th, at 34, Grovehill-rd., Wells. Rev J. Reeves-Brown, Wesleyan Methodist Minister, aged 97 (formerly Coltman-street. Hull), dearly loved father of Sholto, Gerald and Mollie. Hull Daily Mail - Wednesday 10 December 1941. [21]
Thomas and Elizabeth, John's parents had just married, and were living in Elvington with his sister Elizabeth,[22] Thomas' marriage seems to tie up with the census, with Elizabeth being about 5 years older. Thomas married Elizabeth Reeves on 19 October 1840 in Howdenshire, Yorkshire, England.[23] Daughter Elizabeth's age is age is written as one month old in 1841. As the census was taken on 6 June 1841, and her baptism was on 19 May,Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas & Elizabeth, was baptised on 19 May 1841 in Elvington, Yorkshire (East Riding), England.[24] that seems to tie up nicely.
In the 1851 census is written that Elizabeth was born in Estrington or Eastrington. There are no baptism records for Elizabeth in Eastrington.
In the 1861 census it is written Elvington (John had left home by then).[25]
Thomas Brown Head Married M 44 Agricultural labourer Wheldrake, Yorkshire, England
Elizabeth Brown Wife Married F 49 Labourers wife Cliffe, Yorkshire, England
Elizabeth Brown Daughter Unmarried F 19 House servant Elvington, Yorkshire, England
Charles Brown Son M 13 Scholar Cliffe, Yorkshire, England
If my deductions are correct, Elizabeth his mother was the daughter of Charles Reeves of Woodhall, if so she would have had an uncle called John Reeves who died fairly young and was a respected servant of the Graham family (and how Charles came to inherit the hall).
Charles married Elizabeth Tomlinson in 1811.[26] They had a daughter Elizabeth in 1812. [27]
Her mother died in 1814.[28] "Elizabeth wife of Charles Reeves of Cleek Hall".
Charles married again, Frances Harper, he was listed as a widower.[29]
Charles daughter Elizabeth (of Barlby) married Thomas Brown, a farmer of Wheldrake in 1840, her father is noted as Charles Reeves, Chief Constable, and his as William Brown, labourer.[32]
