Biography

Andrew was born to John Brown, a hynd and Elizabeth Mathieson of Melrose. Andrew's father died in April 1841 and Andrew only 9 nine years old.

His mother was living with her four of her five children in Abbey Street, Melrose in 1841 (near the magnificent Melrose Abbey).

By 1851 Andrew was a blacksmith and living with his mother and siblings in Abbey Stant, Melrose.

The Tasmanian Government Railways needed blacksmiths to build their network. Andrew left Gravesend, Kent on the "Mercia" on 13 December 1856 and arrived in Hobart three months later on 17 March 1857. A description was given of him on arrival - tall, dark complexion and eyes, brown hair, long nose, respectable in appearance.^[1]

He probably met the teenaged Margaret McEvoy in Hobart. They were married at the St Andrew's Church of Scotland in Campbell Town on 8 February 1859.^[2]

Children were born to them in Campbell Town up until 1970 when they had moved to Launceston.

Andrew died at his residence, 8 Albert Street, Launceston, on 31 May 1910 and is buried at Carr Villa Cemetery.^[3]
