In 1762, Sarah Scott, wife of Reverend James Scott, was tried for the murder of one of their slaves, a boy named Davy. Testimony showed that she struck the boy with her walking stick—possibly on the back of his head—for neglecting his work, and that he died soon after. The charges were dismissed because it was determined to be "an accidental blow . . . without any malice or design to kill."
