William Brown was born in 1755. He passed away in 1828.
William Brown was a colonel in the North Carolina Militia during the Revolutionary War. He was attached to General Francis Marion's command and had under his command approximately 200 men. He was ordered to "proceed immediately against the insurgents of 'that' county on Little Pee Dee, on the Frontier of South Carolina." In a letter from General Francis Marion to Major General Gates 4 October 1780, General Marion stated that he had delivered nine prisoners to Colonel Brown taken at B. Mingo, and three of the 63 Regt. taken at the Great Savanna. He further stated that at this time, Colonel Brown had about 100 men and was within eight miles of him. The letter was written from Drowning Creek, South Carolina near Cheraw, South Carolina. Several of the descendants of William Brown have been members of the Daughters of the American Revolution based on his military service.
Hugh Brown Cemetery
The Hugh Brown Cemetery, located on Richland Swamp off Highway 71, approximately 1.5 miles south of Red Springs, Robeson County, NC, on the east side of that highway on a rise in the middle of a field. The graves were transcribed between 1970 - 2000 and it is unknown whether the cemetery is still there.
This is the description that was with the plot map: "The Brown Cemetery is located near Philadelphus, North Carolina in Robeson County, and is the place where Hugh Brown and Mary Buie along with Neill Brown and Ann Smith, and William Brown and Mary Campbell are buried. This plat was made in the 1950's by me and confirmed by my father, E. L. Buie, and my cousin, Lacy C. Buie, both descendants of William Brown and Mary Campbell and Neill Brown and Ann Smith. The cemetery is still in possession of the family (Joe Todd Buie).
