Daniel BROWN of Ldn to Mahlon CRAVEN of Ldn. Trust for debt to Bernard WATKINS of Ldn using farm and household items. Delv. pr order 25 Mar 1835. (Delivered after his death.)
*****
Daniel Brown's estate inventory, dated March 20, 1835 -- showed that he died in Loudoun County (probably around Aug 1834, the date the prenuptial agreement was delivered), thus freeing Ann Watkins Brown to migrate to Knox Co, Ohio with her grown children and several other Loudoun Co residents including Mahlon Craven, the trustee of her pre-nuptial. (and another possible brother or relation !?!) It is interesting because it shows the kind of household goods and the relative value of property that Ann and Daniel had on their Loudoun Co farm. She was about 50 when he died.
I cannot guarantee this Daniel Brown was the husband of Ann Watkins. In fact, earlier I had found a headstone of a Daniel Brown buried in the Frederickstown, OH cemetery with a death date and age on headstone as 28 March 1843, age 76y 9 m. (born June 28 1766) making him the right age to be husband of Ann but obviously not the same Daniel Brown who died in Loudoun Co., VA. Without doing more research (I haven't checked 1840 census records for Daniel or Ann Brown, or for all of Ann's kids to try to find Ann), I can't know which is the right Daniel. But the three appraisers of Daniel's estate included a Taylor, a Craven and John Adams, all surnames closely linked to Ann Watkins (John Adams being her son in law.)
At any rate, the following year-1835, all of the Watkins children (married by now) and numerous others from Loudoun Co moved to Knox Co, OH to the Frederickstown area. I've been to the cemetery there and it looked like a repeat of the Loudoun Co phone directory--if they'd had one in 1835! And Ann Brown appears in the 1850 and 1860 Knox Co census records living with 2 different Watkins daughters. I did not find her in the cemetery but I was just doing a walk through and could easily have missed her. She was NOT buried with the Daniel Brown I mentioned above.

Imported only 1835 from Death Date and marked as uncertain.

Medical Men in Culpeper Before the Revolution
The vestries having charge of the poor, boarded them among the planters, and furnished them w/medical attention. The first physician emplyed by the vestries, as early as 1734, was Dr. Andrew CRAIG, then Dr. Thomas HOWISON, then Dr. James GIBBS, and in 1755, Dr. Michael wALLACE,ancestors of the WINSTONS now living in Culpeper, and of the Wallaes of Fredericksburg & Stafford CO. Dr. Michael WALLACE was b in Scotland, and
apprenticed in his youth at Glasgow to Dr. Gustavus BROWN of Port Tobacco, MD, to learn medicine. The indenture is now in the poss. of one of his desc. in KY. That seems to have been the way (before medical schools) to make a doctor.

(Below may be Ann Watkins-Brown step daughter and daughter of Daniel Brown)
I'm searching for the parents of Mary BROWN, who was b. in 1801 in Loudoun County, VA. She married Stephen McPHERSON in 1817. They were Quakers but there is no record of their marriage in Loudoun County, or the nearby other county(?). Could they have married in Maryland since she was just 16? Does anything know anything about such things, the customs of the early 19th century, and among Quakers, who were extremely strict. Mary had 12 children, all born in Knox County, OH, and they moved to Michigan in 1847. Her husband, Stephen, died in 1850, but she never remarried. She died in 1882 in Clinton County, MI. There is no record of her death. What is strange or ironic, is that Stephen's sister, Nancy Ann McPHERSON, married a man named John BROWN, but he was not related to Mary, as far as we know.
I researched every BROWN in the Viginia census for 1800, but since she was born in 1801, she couldn't have been listed. Then I checked 1810, and looked for girls age 9, connected to any BROWN. I'm not sure if I found any. The only BROWN family that we know much about is the one that Stephen's sister, Nancy Ann McPHERSON, married into.
>
> Nancy Ann married John BROWN in 1817, the same year that Mary Brown married Stephen McPherson. My great-uncle who wrote the original genealogy in 1934, said that Mary and John were siblings. However, I found descendants of John Brown who say they were not. John's parents were Isaac Brown Jr. and Sarah Burson, originally from Pennsylvania. John had a sister named Mary but she was born in 1789, according to the Brown source.
>
> Here is what I have written in my FTM software on Mary Brown McPherson: > Her ancestors were unknown in 1999. Her marriage at 16 to Stephen McPherson was recorded in the McPherson Family Bible as reported by M. L. McPherson in 1934.
> Mary Brown McPherson was known to have survived a couple of disasters in her lifetime. First, in Virginia, her house was destroyed by a tornado, but no one was killed. Second, her house was destroyed by fire in Michigan and the family lost all their belongings. This was after her husband died. Mary raised her younger children and never remarried after Stephen died in 1850. Lafe wrote that he saw his "old, toothless grandmother" for the last time before he family moved to Missouri in 1868. Mary died in 1883 in > Michigan and is buried in Sowle Cemetery, Essex Township, Clinton County.
>
> I think my McPhersons moved to Knox County before 1835. We have a record
> of Stephen's father dying in 1828. I think they moved after that, probably with other Loudoun families. The McPhersons were Quaker but later became Methodists, after they moved to Michigan in 1847, I believe. The McPhersons lived in several places in Knox County. He first rented land, then bought property in Middlesex County, I believe. I have my records somewhere! Nancy Ann McPherson Brown and her husband, John Brown, lived in Knox County, too, for awhile, but they moved to Kalamazoo County, Michigan,
before her brother's family pulled up stakes in Ohio.
>
Stephen McPherson III's land dealings in Knox County. He made an indenture (loan) on May 25, 1825, recorded in Loudoun County, VA, "and by the consent of MAHLON CRAVEN, as required in that indenture forever(?), and bought the land in Morris Township, from the heirs of John Armstrong on Sept. 24, 1832, paid $137. Then he bought FROM MAHLON CRAVEN (paying him $800) for 100 acres in Middlebury Township on Nov. 30, 1837. So Craven owned land in Knox County either as a resident or while living in Virginia?
Appreciate any ideas. Bertrand K. Macpherson.
